All four:

  • are cooperatives.
  • won the Starbucks Black Apron Award.  In fact, Kjub Puspeta and Puskud Harapan have each won it twice. 
  • have also worked with U.S. cooperative development organizations – CLUSA and ACDI-VOCA – which have been funded in part by the IDEA/LS Cooperative Development Program

FINCA?  No.  Grameen?  No.  Accion?  No.  

Actually, the 17 million members of credit unions in 24 African nations have aggregate savings of $4.7 billion.  During 2010 they loaned each other $4.8 billion.  

 

  • These funds are not from donors, they are funds saved by members.  They are the same members who elect their board directors and who approve policies.  For many in Africa their credit union is the only financial institution they can access, and the only one that they trust.

CARE’s 22 founding organizations included the Cooperative League of the U.S.A., the Credit Union National Association, the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association along with other cooperative, labor and faith-based organizations.

 Many of the U.S. cooperatives that participated in founding CARE began their own international programs during the 1950s and early 1960s.
